The other day I was looking for something on RSS. You know, Really Simple Syndication. If you’ve worked with the stuff you know the guy that came up with that was a sadist. Anyway I searched the Kindle Store “RSS” and came up with five books—or five different authors or editors for one book. All but one had the same image—thus the image above. Five different prices too: $1.58; $4.77; $6.27; $3.80 and $9.99. I sampled a couple and they looked alike: started out with quotes from Herman Melville. I bought the cheap one (described in a previous post). Forget it. I bought the one for $4.77. Ten times longer, but still didn’t give me the answers I was looking for. For one thing I got the distinct impression the author wasn’t as familiar with the English language as he should have been. Not that I was looking for Joseph Conrad (he learned English in his twenties), but there were too many bewildering sentences like this one—"Until recently, the internet was predominantly a textual channel without much interesting facts to desire for more!"—for the reader to take the author’s expertise seriously. He—or she—could have at least had a competent English proofreader. For another, the book never strayed from a barrage of enthusiastic generalities. It said RSS would improve our online lives by replacing email and cost-per-click advertising, but it never got down to the dull mechanics of providing RSS to a website. Wait! The ebook did take me to Yahoo and hook me up to My Yahoo. Big deal. It described Aggregators and RSS radars but never how to integrate them into my blog. In short it left me with more unanswered questions than I started with. A very frustrating experience.
